One of the issues that come up when it comes to tithing is what it means for the believer. Often, people do not have a grasp at why tithing is good for the spirit. Often, people do it out of compulsion or a sense of obligation. As a matter of fact, one of the common approaches of a life of faith is from a standpoint of it being some kind of job. This comes from the idea of a God that is a killjoy. Some people may even see living for Christ in this world as punishment for their sin until they pass over into heaven.
Among the many issues with this approach is that it brings about the works of the flesh. Instead of getting a joy out of living for Christ, people often wind up becoming smug and judgmental. As a matter of fact, they get so judgmental that they tend to look at someone according to how they appear as opposed to the type of life they are leading or how they interact with others. For instance, if someone is not living a luxurious life, then they are in sin. This ignores the fact that Jesus himself and his disciples were not living in luxury other than the luxury of being accepted by God.
Another thing that happens is that this brings forth envy and pettiness. Often, they become like the Devil who roams around like a lion looking for someone to devour. If they see someone who seems to be getting more out of following Christ, then they may approach that person with accusations because the accuser himself has become stagnant in his walk with Christ. This is a sign that the accuser himself has sought out God for the wrong reasons.
On the other hand, the true believer in Christ who is often persecuted even by the people who claim to worship the same God is actually living a more abundant life even if he is not carrying around a lot of materials. He may even be faithful in tithing or service to the less fortunate. One of the reasons that he seems to be living a fuller life is that he lives according to matthew 6 19. He focuses on storing treasures for himself in heaven as opposed to storing treasures for himself on Earth which is passing away. Also, followers are subconsciously aware of how Jesus and his disciples struggled. Therefore, they may be faced with guiltwhen they see someone who seems to be living more closely.
One thing that needs to be remembered is that how rich you are does not determine your standing with God. In the end, the most important aspect of your life in Christ is where your heart is. Therefore, working on growing closer to God in spirit and truth is one of the most important things to do so that you can live life more abundantly and live in a way that is pleasing to God.
